SIGMA

noun self-styled lone wolf
A self-styled lone wolf. See also: someone who has never once been alone.
1

Variations

  • A man who operates outside social hierarchies, allegedly.
  • Grindset practitioner.
  • Ironic honorific for anyone doing anything slightly independent.
2

Origin

Escaped from manosphere hierarchy charts (alpha, beta, and so on) around 2021, then got laundered through meme culture until it meant almost nothing — which is when middle schoolers adopted it as the highest compliment available.

3

Examples

"He brought his own lunch instead of ordering with us. Absolute sigma."
"The sigma grindset is waking up at 4am to be tired by 9."
"She left the group project chat. Sigma move."
4

Cultural context

Almost exclusively ironic now. If someone under 16 calls you sigma, it is probably sincere and possibly the nicest thing they will ever say to you.
